What is Team Building? Team building aims to improve the functioning of a team in order to improve staff performance and enable the organization to achieve better levels of performance in its sector of activity. For a group of people working together to “work,” the first ingredient is undoubtedly a good team spirit, which means that each member must feel that they are part of something bigger and stronger than their individual contribution. Creating team spirit is a major challenge for organizations because a group of people together does not necessarily behave like a team.

Creating team spirit is a major challenge for organizations because a group of people together does not necessarily behave like a team. To build a strong team that works together toward a common goal, members need to get to know each other, get along, and communicate effectively. They must also develop the skills needed to build a good team spirit. They will succeed if everyone on the team trusts each other and accepts each other's differences.
The origin of team building
The concept of team building already existed long before the term “team building” was used as it is known today. It was at the end of the 1920s and the beginning of the 1930s, with the Hawthorne Studies (one of the first studies on employee behavior conducted by Elton Mayo, Fritz Roesthlisberger and William Dickson) demonstrating the effectiveness of group employees in good conditions, that the team idea is emerging. Faced with these findings, companies understand that employee relationships and a positive work culture are necessary for performance.
In the 1970s, there were numerous theories and methodologies for team building. However, the logic of individual behaviors remains dominant in work culture.
It was therefore in the early 1980s that team building appeared in the United States. Given the economic situation, the way of seeing the team has been redesigned, leading to the creation of systems that reward teams.
The world of sport is a precursor to these concepts of cohesion, support, collaboration and shared goals. It is also from this environment that the term “team” (team building) comes from. Sports teams have a very big influence on the way employers manage their work teams, since they have the values they want in the business world.
